Congenital heart defects are common in humans, but the underlying basis for these defects
is not well understood. It has been clear that abnormal heart development is at the root of
these diseases, but the genes involved have remained elusive until recently. This review
focuses on recent advances in our understanding of mammalian heart formation, and how
some of these processes, when disrupted, lead to congenital heart defects.
