Various members of the Wnt gene family have been identified as activated oncogenes in
mouse mammary tumors. We show that some tumors are oligoclonal for activation of a Wnt
gene, and clonal variation when those tumors are transplanted to become hormone-
independent. The normal function of many Wnt genes is to control pattern formation in early
embryos, as shown by expression profiles and by mutant analysis.
