Since THE ORIGINAL study of Drury and Szent-Gyorgyi,'adenosine and adenine
nucleotides have been recognized to have important and potent cardiovascular actions. In
the heart, adenosine is mostly known as a vasoactive agent, ie, coronary vasodilator, 2'3 but
it has also been shown to (1) depress sinoatrial (SA) and atrioventricular (AV) node
activity,(2) reduce atria1 contractility,(3) attenuate the stimulatory actions of catecholamines
