Hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) controls the expression of a number of genes such as
vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Erythropoietin in low oxygen conditions
(hypoxia). VEGF is strongly induced at both the mRNA and protein expression level by a
number of hormones and growth factors in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC)
