was conducted between September 1986 and April 1989 in all hospitals treating children
with IDDM in Finlnd. Serum samples were obtained at the diagnosis of IDDM from a total of
780 probands and 793 siblings. Of the siblings, 28 already had IDDM at the beginning of the
study. The study protocol is described in detail elsewhere (13).
