T has been exciting progress in our understand-ing of hepatic fibrosis in the past
decade. Hepatic fibrosis, or the deposition of extracellular matrix, was once viewed as a
static feature of chronic liver injury which inevitably led to cirrhosis and liver failure. The
current view envisions fibrosis as a programmed response to injury which is dynamic and
