RESULTS Laboratory evaluation of this 6-day-old infant with an unusual infection,
Streptococcus pneumoniae, revealed a normal for age complete blood count, quantitative
immunoglobulins, and T-and B-cell numbers (data not shown). Antibody titers directed
against S pneumoniae were not performed because of the normal maternal IgG content of
this 6-day-old full-term infant's serum. HIV serology and PCR performed at 3 and 8 weeks of
