By knowing the mechanisms through which genetic variants are generated, we should gain
a better understanding of evolution. Two new papers—one theoretical and one experimental—
show that mutator alleles (which can lead to a huge increase in mutation rate) can speed up
the rate at which bacteria adapt to a changing environment, even if these alleles remain at a
low frequency.
