Oestrogen is one of the most important of the physiological stimuli that can override tonic
inhibitory control of prolactin (PRL) secretion by dopamine. Mechanisms of physiological
regulation of PRL secretion by oestrogens, possible importance of 2-and 4-hydroxy
oestrogens (catechol oestrogens), and role of oestrogens in pathological
hyperprolactinaemia are discussed. The emphasis is on studies in humans.
