Two patients aged 11 and 22 years who had had episodes of megaloblastic anaemia since
early childhood were investigated. Anaemia and low values for vitamin B 12 in serum
responded to parenteral administration of vitamin B 12. Vitamin B 12 was not absorbed from
the intestine even when intrinsic factor was given with the vitamin. Gastric juice was normal.
Absorption of other nutrients was normal.
