Abstract
27 adult male volunteers were given one dose of one reovirus serotype intranasally. They were isolated in groups of 3, and each member of a group was given the same serotype. In all 9 volunteers received each serotype. Attempts to select only volunteers who had low hagglutination-inhibiting antibodies largely failed.
3 out of each group of 9 volunteers who received types 1 and 2, and 2 out of 9 who received type 3 were ill. Those receiving types 1 and 2 had malaise, rhinorrhoea, cough, pharyngitis and headache. The illness lasted 4 to 7 days. Those receiving type 3 had rhinitis. 3 out of 18 volunteers who were given a placebo had a mild respiratory illness.
