become ligated to αvβ3. One might predict that the physical association between MMP-2
and αvβ3 might not only facilitate ECM remodeling but would enable αvβ3-mediated
endothelial cell invasion through the proteolyzed matrix by attachment to exposed RGD
sites. In recent studies, natural breakdown fragments of MMP-2, termed PEX, were shown to
accumulate in tissues that had undergone neovascularization (13). In fact, recombinant PEX …

Role of alpha v integrins during angiogenesis.

BP Eliceiri, DA Cheresh - Cancer journal (Sudbury, Mass.), 2000 - europepmc.org
Angiogenesis depends on specific molecular interactions between vascular cells and
components of the extracellular matrix. This review focuses on the recent advances in the
understanding of the mechanism of action of integrins and integrin antagonists during
angiogenesis. For example, angiogenesis induced with vascular endothelial
growth/permeability factor but not with basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) depends on
integrin avb5 and Src kinase activity. In contrast, bFGF-induced angiogenesis requires …
