Abstract
This article focuses on an appraisal of platelet activating factor (PAF) and asthma. In the lated 1980s, great hopes were held by researchers interested in the pathophysiology of asthma and those within the pharmaceutical industry that PAF was an important mediator in asthma and that PAF antagonists would play an important role in the treatment of asthma. The development of a range of potent and specific PAF antagonists and their investigation in man has allowed critical evaluation of this theory and allows one to draw a conclusions about the role, if any, for PAF in asthma.
