The terminal catabolism of most plasma lipoproteins occurs chiefly in the liver by means of
receptor-mediated endocytosis. The low density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor, discovered by
Brown and Goldstein in cultured human fibroblasts, is now recognized to be mainly
operative in uiuo on the surface of hepatocytes. This receptor mediates the removal from the
