Recent advances have characterized the protective immune response against
Mycobacterium tuberculosis. These include identification of the phenotype of some
protective cells, the antigens to which these cells respond and the cytokines produced in
response to infection which modulate disease. Progress has also been made in inducing
this response by vaccination.
