Acute mental stress inhibits gastric and pancreatic exocrine secretion in humans (25). In volunteers who had earlier participated in physiologic studies of gastric and pancreatic secretion, placement of a nasogastric tube did not alter cardiovascular indicators of stress (26), suggesting that repeated stress led to a tolerance of its physiologic effects. There are, however, no studies to show that gastric and pancreatic responses differ in ‘professional’swallowers compared with in tube-naive volunteers. In any case, it would be advisable to randomize the order in which the tests are conducted so that not all subjects start the series of studies with a particular test solution. It would probably also be advisable to choose subjects who are either all tubenaive or have all had previous experience of gastrointestinal intubations.
