There is widespread agreement that mitochondria have a function in apoptosis, but the
mechanisms behind their involvement remain controversial. Here we suggest that opening
of a multiprotein complex called the mitochondrial permeability transition pore complex is
sufficient (and, usually, necessary) for triggering apoptosis.
