A critical overview of the literature is presented, with particular emphasis on methodology
and with suggestions for future research. The importance of diagnosis, classification, as well
as defining subgroups within the etiologically heterogeneous population ofautistic children
is discussed in terms of response to drug treatment. Further research into the biological
process (es) underlying this clinical picture should aid the development of a more rational
pharmacological approach—an adjunct to the total treatment of the individual child.
Abstract
A critical overview of the literature is presented, with particular emphasis on methodology and with suggestions for future research. The importance of diagnosis, classification, as well as defining subgroups within the etiologically heterogeneous population ofautistic children is discussed in terms of response to drug treatment. Further research into the biological process(es) underlying this clinical picture should aid the development of a more rational pharmacological approach — an adjunct to the total treatment of the individual child.
