Abstract
In adults the maintenance of a nearly constant normal amount of body fat, and therefore a nearly constant bodyweight, requires physiological regulation of some precision. The mechanisms of such control are reviewed. Some evidence that regulation of energy balance involves a hormonal feedback signal with a long persistence in the body has been obtained with parabiotic rats. It is suggested that a suitable hormone might provide the body with a means of measuring the amount of fat in store by its dilution; such a tracer might be a steroid. Production of several steroid hormones is known to be controlled by feedback mechanisms.-D. L. D.
