DISCUSSION Primary neuronal cultures have been used extensively to characterize the
functional properties of synapses and to study the synaptic effects of pharmacological
agents, proteins, and genetic modification. Coculture preparations comprised of dissociated
DRG and DH neurons have been used as a model system for synaptic transmission at
primary afferent synapses. Additionally, this model permits simultaneous measurement of
post-synaptic response from multiple cell populations in response to DRG activation.
