Results As indicated in the Table, there were 24 deaths within one week after a single
intratracheal injection of 1 or 2 mg of papain. Twenty-one rats survived this period and were
killed at intervals. Of 40 silicotic rats that were injected intratracheally three times in one
week with a total of 6 mg papain, only one died within one week.
