PREVIOUS work in this laboratory demonstrated that administration of a purine analogue, 6-
mercaptopurine, suppressed the antibody response to a soluble antigen (human serum
albumin) in rabbits1. It was shown that the antimetabolite could block completely the primary
immune response to the purified protein antigen; its effect on the secondary response,
however, was minimal2. It is the purpose of this communication to describe the apparent
induction of immunological tolerance in adult rabbits by the use of 6-mercaptopurine.
Abstract
PREVIOUS work in this laboratory demonstrated that administration of a purine analogue, 6-mercaptopurine, suppressed the antibody response to a soluble antigen (human serum albumin) in rabbits1. It was shown that the antimetabolite could block completely the primary immune response to the purified protein antigen; its effect on the secondary response, however, was minimal2. It is the purpose of this communication to describe the apparent induction of immunological tolerance in adult rabbits by the use of 6-mercaptopurine.
