Building of tissue, whether in the embryo or after injury in the adult, requires coordination of
several important cellular actions including fibrogenesis, proliferation, migration, contraction,
fibrolysis, and apoptosis. For a successful result, these cellular responses must occur in a
temporally and spatially correct manner. An imbalance in, or mistiming of, fibrogenesis and
fibrolysis may lead to scar formation and alteration of tissue structure and function.
