It was natural, while I was thinking of whatI should say today, for me to recall with admiration-and, let me add, astonishment-that one man had been able to write such a monumental work as The Pathology of the Cell. In this he displayed his virtuosity, not only in the way he presented his knowledge of the cell, but also in the way he brought out the very interesting and exciting sweep of the growth, over recent centuries, of our knowledge of the enormously complex activities of cells.
