The effect of nicotinic acid and pentaerythritoltetranicotinate upon experimental atherosclerosis in the rabbit

(1) In rabbits fed 1% cholesterol+ 3% coconut oil in the diet, addition of 0.5% nicotinic nicotin
acid or pentaerythritoltetranicotinate (= PETN) reduced the increase of free and esterified
cholesterol and triglycerides in serum. Both drugs reduced the lipid infiltrated area of the
aorta and the increase of esterified cholesterol and phospholipids in the aortic wall. PETN
tended generally to be somewhat more effective than nicotinic acid. 2.(2) In rabbits fed 1%
