Background Chorea in Huntington's disease (HD) is often treated with neuroleptics such as
haloperidol, but some patients develop extrapyramidal side effects with these drugs. In many
countries, the dopamine-depleting agent tetrabenazine is also used to treat chorea, but to
date its efficacy has only been shown in open-label studies. Objective To investigate the
safety, efficacy and dose tolerability of tetrabenazine for treating chorea in HD in a
randomized controlled fashion.
