Studies have been undertaken to investigate the role of cellular autophagy in the
accommodation of stress in a biological system. Chloroquine (Aralen hydrochloride), an
antimalarial and anti-inflammatory drug, was used to induce autophagy in rat liver. A method
is presented which uses differential and discontinuous sucrose gradient centrifugation for
the preparation of autophagic vacuole-enriched fractions from rat liver. Ultrastructural
