Attempts to immunize experimental animals against malaria by injection of attenuated
sporozoites date from the 1940s. The discovery of Plasmodium berghei a decade later gave
these studies a new impetus and promising results were obtained with rodents and with
monkeys. The next bold but logical step towards the goal of an eventual malaria vaccine
was the attempt to observe the results of immunization of man by inactivated sporozoites of
human malaria.
Abstract
Attempts to immunize experimental animals against malaria by injection of attenuated sporozoites date from the 1940s. The discovery of Plasmodium berghei a decade later gave these studies a new impetus and promising results were obtained with rodents and with monkeys. The next bold but logical step towards the goal of an eventual malaria vaccine was the attempt to observe the results of immunization of man by inactivated sporozoites of human malaria.
