Uric acid is a well-established scavenger of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species such as
hydroxyl radical and peroxynitrite. However, little attention has been paid to the relationship
between uric acid and nitric oxide. This paper reports the identification and characterization
of a reaction product of uric acid induced by nitric oxide. When uric acid was treated with
nitric oxide gas in a neutral solution under aerobic conditions, uric acid was consumed,
