Abstract
Barbital is known to be excreted unchanged in urine of man and dog, and to increase urinary excretion of L-ascorbic acid by rats (Abst. 2581, Vol. 10). As little as 10 mg. sodium barbital daily in the diet of male Wistar rats significantly in creased excretion of D-glucuronic acid as well as of ascorbic acid. Intraperitoneal injection, 75 mg. twice daily, into 4 male guineapigs increased excretion of D-glucuronic acid, which this species cannot convert to ascorbic acid (Abst: 3409, Vol. 27). Both substances increased in the urine of female dogs given 50 mg. barbital per kg. bodyweight by stomach tube, and ascorbic acid increased in the urine of dogs given chloretone. In rats, substances excreted chiefly as glucuronides, namely, borneol, α-naphthol and phenolphthalein, did not affect excretion of ascorbic acid. In adrenalectomised rats the effect of barbital or chloretone on excretion of ascorbic acid was similar to that in intact rats; in hypophysectomised rats it was much less.
Incorporation of 14 C from D-glucose into D-glucuronic acid and L-ascorbic acid increased about tenfold in rats given barbital by injection; with chloretone by stomach tube (see also Abst. 414, Vol. 27) incorporation into L-ascorbic acid was greater and into D-glucuronic acid less than this.
