Cell senescence as an anticancer defense. Mutations that activate the oncogenes Ras or
BRAF or inactivate the tumor suppressor Pten produce premalignant (early-stage) lesions. If
there is additional loss of p53 or p16/pRB function, premalignant cells cannot undergo
cellular senescence and progress instead into malignant tumors.
