A review is presented of the part played by asymmetric cell divisions in the development of
the sensory organs of the peripheral nervous system of Drosophila, with special reference to
the mechanisms of cell fate determination. Studies on various genes involved in bristle
development have suggested that both intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of asymmetric
cell division function in the lineage of the sensory organs and bristles.
