Early fatty streaks and advanced lesions are characterized by the deposition of cholesterol
and cholesterol oxidation products (oxysterols). Oxysterols have been shown to be cytotoxic
and pro-atherogenic compared to cholesterol and are found in cholesterol-rich processed
