Isografts and allografts of intact pancreatic islets have been shown by Ballinger and Lacy to
ameliorate the effects of experimental diabetes in the rat (1). These workers also reported
the successful isolation of islets from the human pancreas and demonstrated the in vitro
ability of these islets to produce insulin when challenged with a high concentration of
glucose. These observations suggest that transplantation of intact pancreatic islets may be
of value in the treatment of clinical diabetes.
