The subject of this conference is the role of nutrients in preventing smokingrelated diseases. As reviewed by other papers in this volume, smokers have lower plasma and/or pulmonary lavage levels of antioxidant nutrients such as vitamins C and E. Other papers also review the evidence that antioxidant nutrients provide some protection against diseases associated with smoking (such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and emphysema).
It is the purpose of this paper to review the nature of the oxidants in cigarette smoke and cigarette tar and the mechanisms by which these oxidants are formed. We believe that smoking places an oxidative burden not only on the lung, but also on the entire organism of the smoker. This paper presents mechanistic insights into why antioxidant nutrients might play an important role in protecting smokers against some (but, unfortunately, not all) of the pathological consequences of smoking.
