Abstract
In this investigation, the role of circulating antibody in malarial immunity was studied in Gambia-a hyperendemic area for malaria. The therapeutic effect of gamma globulin prepared from the serum of immune adults was tested in young children while they were suffering from severe clinical malaria with high parasitaemia. It appeared that the immune gamma globulin was effective both against Plasmodium falciparum and P. malariae but probably had no action against the gametocytes.
The gamma globulin synthesis in adult Africans was measured and compared with that of healthy Europeans. Whereas the albumin synthesis was similar in both groups the rate of gamma globulin synthesis in unprotected Gambians was found to be about 7 times that observed in Europeans. Protection by antimalarial therapy considerably reduced the rate of gamma globulin synthesis in adult Gambians.
