Nonthyroidal illness influences thyroid hormone production and action at multiple levels,
including the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) axis, thyroid hormone transport, and
metabolism [10, 15, 19, 38, 64]. These changes in thyroid function in the setting of systemic
