Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease occurs most frequently in obese middle-aged women. It also
may occur, however, in children and normal-weight men with normal glucose and lipid
metabolism. The clinical diagnosis is based on findings consistent with the insulin resistance
syndrome and exclusion of alcohol abuse and viral, genetic, autoimmune, and drug-induced
