The molecular basis of articular lubrication: I. Purification and properties of a lubricating fraction from bovine synovial fluid

The unique lubricating quality of synovial fluid between apposed articular cartilages
suggests that this fluid contains a moiety which is able to interact in a specific manner with
the cartilaginous surfaces. Fractionation of whole synovial fluid using ultrafiltration on
Millipore filters, density gradient centrifugation, and column chromatography resulted in the
preparation of a fraction (approximately 0.05% of the original protein) which was able to
