The mammalian proximal tubule reabsorbs approximately 80% of the NaHCO3 and
approximately 50% of the filtered NaCl from the glomerular filtrate (1–3). All of the
transcellular NaCl and two-thirds of the transcellular NaHCO3 absorption are mediated by
the proximal tubule apical membrane Na/H exchanger (4, 5). In addition, transcellular
NaHCO3 absorption also provides the driving force for paracellular NaCl absorption (6).
