The need for normal human subjects to use in appraising the activity of antimalarial drugs
led, in 1944, to the establishment of a clinical research unit at the Illinois State Penitentiary,
Stateville, Illinois. Through an arrangement with the De-partment of Public Safety, 3 one floor
of the prison hospital and a portion of a second floor were placed at the disposal of the
Malaria Research Project. Approximately 500 inmates volunteered to act as subjects.
