According to classic models of viral infection, which draw heavily from bacteriophage work,
the process of infection starts with adherence of free virions to host cells. This view has
dominated the thinking about mechanisms of infection by HIV. Researchers have only
recently appreciated that cells can have a direct role in transmission of HIV.
