Prenylation is a type of lipid modification involving covalent addition of either farnesyl (15-
carbon) or more commonly geranylgeranyl (20-carbon) isoprenoids via thioether linkages to
cysteine residues at or near the C terminus of intracellular proteins. The attached lipid is
required for proper function of the modified protein, either as a mediator of membrane
