In rats with hereditary hypothalamic diabetes insipidus (Brattleboro rats) the gene for the
vasopressin precursor lacks a single G residue in the protein-coding region. The mutation
gives rise to an open reading frame predicting a hormone precursor having a different C-
terminus.
