Abstract
The capsule of GBS is an important virulence factor for Streptococcus agalactiae or group B Streptococcus (GBS). The genes responsible for capsule production were first identified by transposon mutagenesis which generated several acapsular and asialo mutants1. Subsequently, the DNA flanking the sites of insertion was then cloned and sequenced. One such insertion site occurred within a 2.8 kb Eco RI fragment, which contained three open reading frames designated cpsABC. In this study, we continue the characterization of theis region by targetted mutagenesis of each of these genes and transcriptional analyisis. Additionally, we also describe two new genes upstream of cpsA which may play a role in capsule production.
