Most cells contain highly organized microtubule systems. In cultured vertebrate cells the
cytoplasmic microtubule complex (CMTC) is seen to radiate from the centrosomal region.
During mitosis most microtubules terminate at either the centrosomes or the kinetochores
(see Dustin, 1978 for review). When cells are depleted of microtubules by colcemid or
nocodazole, new microtubules appear to grow preferentially from the centrosome in
