After viral infection, naive CD8+ T cells become activated and either differentiate into effector
cells, which eliminate virus-infected cells, or convert to memory-type T cells, awaiting re-
challenge with virus. Here, Dörte Hamann and colleagues propose a model for antigen-
induced differentiation of human CD8+ T cells in vivo and discuss its implications for the
lineage relation between memory and effector T cells.
