Bronchopulmonary dysplasia results from treatment of immature lungs resulting from an
abnormally short gestation or from pulmonary hypoplasia. Lung hypoplasia secondary to
lung compression, oligohydramnios, or diminished complexity of tissue. Normal lung
development and the pathologic process associated with lung hypoplasia and their effects of
postnatal lung structure are reviewed.
