Organ apoptosis in the septic patient: A potential therapeutic target?

In the current issue of Critical Care Medicine, Dr. Richard Hotchkiss and his colleagues [1] in
St. Louis examined solid organ apoptosis, caspase-3, and BCL-2 activity in 20 patients who
had died from sepsis and multisystem organ dysfunction. The findings imply that in as many
as 50% of these patients, widespread apoptosis of lymphoid populations from the spleen
and colon was evident. A high incidence of apoptosis was also seen in lymphoid cells of the
ileum, whereas apoptosis was not seen in parenchymal cells of the liver or in epithelial cells …
