T he leishmaniases are parasitic diseases of multi-faceted clinical manifestations,
widespread in the Old and New Worlds, with a great epidemiological diversity. They are
caused by at least 20 Leishmaniu species, protozoa transmitted by the bite of female
sandflies, which are of the genus Phlebotomus in the Old World and Lutzomyin in the New
World. About 30 species of sandflies are proven vectors; the usual reservoir hosts include
